IKO CERTIFICATION STANDARDS.
 
               
 
The IKO Certification standards are designed to validate your achievements on your Kiteboarder Card, from your very first flight to your first jumps.
You can complete the programs in full or not and still be certified according to the level you have achieved.
 
                          
 

1-A  Foil kites on handles or bar.

  • Set-up/rigging & ground handling skills
  • Per flight checks of equipment
  • Safety checks of kite & equipment before flying

 

1-B  Leash systems & kite killers

  • Personal & safety equipment required for powerkiting,

            including emergency equipment for          specific locations.

 

1-C  Bar & Handle control systems (2 & 4 line kites)

  • Launching & landing with assistance
  • Use of kite leash & safety systems
  • Piloting in the wind window & power zone,

            Understanding key areas and safety

  • Walk accross the wind with kite to simulate traction
  • Simulate change of direction using a top turn
  • Untwisting lines while kite is flying

 

1-D  Foils-Bar & Handles

  • Landing the kite alone
  • Safety packdown

 

1-E   General Information on flying locations

  • Understanding of weather & wind
  • Understanding the dangers of wind effects

 

1-F   Foil kites

  • Incident simulation-Control kite & leash out when fallen over.

           

 

1-G  S.E.A

  • basic locations & conditions asessment before you fly

LEVEL 1 A-E
1-A
  • Carry & setup the lines & kite
  • Determine the wind direction, upwind & downwind
  • Fly a small trainer kite on the wind window edge &

            maintain it close to the ground

  • Know how to stop the kite power in case of a problem

           Be aware that the kite leash must be worn at all times

1-B

  • Be aware of the area where the kite can crash

            downwind of the pilot

  • Recover the kite & secure it on land
  • Position the kite on request from 9 to 3 oclock on the

            wind window edge

  • Launch the kite with an assistant & choose the right

            angle to the wind

  • Fly the kite in the power area without crashing it
  • Twist & untwist the lines while the kite flies
  • Land the kite with the help of an assistant

1-C

  • Fly the kite hooked into the harness
  • Fly hooked into the harness with one hand
  • Activate the chicken loop quick release

1-D

  • Perform a downwind course by bodydragging & using the power of the kite

           

  • Have control in the water and enter & exit the water

            alone

1-E

  • Relaunch the kite from the water
  • Wind the lines in the water & recover the kite
  • Perform a self rescue in deep water
  • Identify potential wind obstacles creating lift or

            downdraft and be able to define the wind direction

  • Understand the dangers of practicing with onshore 

            and offshore wind

 


 

 INTERMEDIATE KITEBOARDER PROGRAM

 
LEVEL 2 F-I
2-F
  • Define if the practice area is safe for practice
  • Set up & check equipment alone (kite, lines & bar

 

2-G

  • In the water, body drag while creating constant power with the kite on one side of the wind window & then on other side. Go away from

       the shore, go downwind and then back to the      shore

          

  • Body drag whiile practicing the power stroke on one

           side of the window then the other

  • In the water, control the kite with one hand while

           hooked into the harness, keeping it stable

 

2-H

  • Know the water start theory: board & body

           positioning & kite flying

  • Recover the board in deep water, position the feet in the footstraps and keep the position while flying

               the kite

          

 

2-I

  • Stand up on the board & ride while moving the kiteup & down

          

  • Set up an inflatable 4/5 line kite alone & check its

           properly done

  • Fly an inflatable 4/5 line kite hooked in. Activate the safety systems of a 4/5 line bar

          

  • Adjust a 4 line kite while using the movement of the bar. (Sheeting in & out)

          

  • Adjust the trim system of a 4/5 line kite to avoid it

           flying backward, & to adjust the power

 


 

INDEPENDENT KITEBOADER PROGRAM

 

LEVEL 3 J-N

3-J

  • Know the right of way rules
  • Ride away from shore & come back to the shore

 

3-K

  • Edge on the heel and toe side to change course
  • Accelerate by edging down & moving the kite
  • Stop by edging
  • Be able to keep an edge

 

3-L

  • Ride away from the shore& come back to the starting point   
  • Consistently ride upwind

3-M

  • Recover the board by body dragging upwind
  • Ride a Twin Tip
  • Change Direction

 

3-N

  • Know the theoretical approach to jumps
  • Perform a small jump and land it
